The Fiery Discus

Kousalya Sivakumar delineated the qualities of Sudarsana.

The topic for Kousalya Sivakumar’s musical discourse at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha on December 21, was Lord Narayana’s Sudarsana Chakra. Resource material is abundant for the subject and Kousalya quoted from the pasurams of Azhwars and also Vedanta Desika’s works, besides including verses from the Ahirbudhnya Samhita, wherein Ahirbudhnya (Siva) extols Sudarsana.

An Ethereal Concert from a Noted Maestro

Some concerts have a way of rendering your ignorance of the nuances of Carnatic music irrelevant. It is a little like coming face to face with a pristine and peerless diamond. It enraptures you, and all you need is the human ability to recognize and respond to its dazzle. T.M. Krishna’s concert at the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha turned out to be a similar experience. Virtuosity and deep emotiveness combined to elevate the audience.

The first piece, ‘sujana jIvana’ in Khamas evoked images of an ethereal beauty being adorned in a hundred different ways. The well-known composition (as the novice in me subsequently learnt) was a garland in the artist’s hands, and each line and phrase revealed to the artist and the audience, beauty in yet another form.

Melody-laced meeting

It was the meeting of North and South in terms of the music and, that of East and West as regards the instruments. Curiosity was writ large on the faces of the rasikas as Kadri Gopalnath shared the dais with Pravin Godkhindi. The saxophone and the flute or bansuri together created mesmerising effects as was evident from the rounds of spontaneous applause from the audience.
Both instruments demand total dedication and rigorous practice to achieve mastery. For Kadri, son of a nagaswaram vidwan, it was a chance presence at a band performance that drew him to the vibrant tone of the brass instrument. As for Pravin, his father Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi, is one of the senior most flautists of Karnataka, and has been performing for over 40 years.

Awards for Sowmya, T.N. Krishnan and Prasanna Venkatraman

“It is unfortunate that Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, one of the oldest in the country and which has been the abode of some of the greatest Carnatic exponents, does not have its own building,” Tirumala Tirupathi Ilayakoil Kelvi Appan Govinda Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamigal lamented here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the 111th December Music Festival of the sabha, the Jeeyar pointed out that the sabha was established in 1900 and had a glorious heritage. It has promoted every genre of fine arts like music, drama and dance, he added. He urged the president of the sabha, Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, to initiate immediate steps to construct a building and promised that he would declare it open too.
