Kousalya Sivakumar delineated the qualities of Sudarsana.

The topic for Kousalya Sivakumar’s musical discourse at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha on December 21, was Lord Narayana’s Sudarsana Chakra. Resource material is abundant for the subject and Kousalya quoted from the pasurams of Azhwars and also Vedanta Desika’s works, besides including verses from the Ahirbudhnya Samhita, wherein Ahirbudhnya (Siva) extols Sudarsana.

She delineated how the Lord’s weapon is synonymous with the Lord Himself. Lord Narayana is known as Purusha, because of certain attributes of His. Sudarsana has all these attributes too, and so Sudarsana too may be referred to as Purusha. When one is on the first step of the ladder of bhakti, the Lord’s weapons appear as weapons. As one progresses to the next step, His weapons appear as ornaments.

To see the Lord’s weapons as the Lord Himself is the epitome of bhakti. Kousalya quoted a verse from Kooranarayana Jeer’s Sudarsana Satakam, in which Sudarsana is seen as representing every numeral because of His various attributes. Thus He is synonymous with two, because He gets rid of the twin traps of sin and virtue. He is synonymous with three, because Lord Siva the three-eyed One worships Him; He is five because He gets rid of the temptations that our five senses lead us into; He is the numeral nine, because He nullifies the effects of planetary positions on our lives and so on.

Kousalya pointed out that Sudarsana had accompanied the Lord during each of His avataras. In the Narasimha avatara, for example, Sudarsana took the form of the Lord’s nails.

Verses from ‘Shodasayudha stotram’ and ‘Sudarsanashtakam’ were rendered in ragas Naattai, Varali, Valaji, Kalyani, Hamsanandi, Dhanyasi, Sahana, Begada, Kiravani, Khamas, Atana, Saranga, Kuntalavarali and Surutti. Kousalya had chosen ragas that suited the meaning and meter of the verses.

Namagiri Ramesh gave a solo rendering of Nammazhvar’s ‘Kaisina Paravai’ pasuram in Shanmukhapriya, the 100th verse in the Sudarsana Sataka in Dhanyasi, Tirumazhisai Azhwar’s ‘Punpula vazhi adaithu’ in Ananda Bhairavi and Periyazhvar’s ‘ Naazhigai Koorittu’ in Vasantha. Her voice has a rich timbre.

On Vedanta Desika’s refrain ‘Jaya Jaya Sri Sudarsana,’ Kousalya observed that Sudarsana’s consort is Jayasri, also known as Vijayavalli. In this, as in other interesting interpretations, the guiding hand of scholar Dr. M.K. Srinivasan, whose help Kousalya acknowledged, was evident.

Some concerts have a way of rendering your ignorance of the nuances of Carnatic music irrelevant. It is a little like coming face to face with a pristine and peerless diamond. It enraptures you, and all you need is the human ability to recognize and respond to its dazzle. T.M. Krishna’s concert at the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha turned out to be a similar experience. Virtuosity and deep emotiveness combined to elevate the audience.

The first piece, ‘sujana jIvana’ in Khamas evoked images of an ethereal beauty being adorned in a hundred different ways. The well-known composition (as the novice in me subsequently learnt) was a garland in the artist’s hands, and each line and phrase revealed to the artist and the audience, beauty in yet another form.

This was followed by a composition of Shri. Muthuswami Dikshithar. TMK with his characteristic wit, made it a point to tell the audience that while the ragam may sound slightly different from what they might usually hear, it was nevertheless Anandabhairavi!

We learnt that this was owing to the treatment of the ragam by Shri. Muthuswami Dikshithar, distinguished from the approach of the other two great composer-musicians of the trinity. TMK’s treatment of Anandabhairavi through the composition was expansive, and you felt that if the concept of justice could be applied to the exploring of a composition, it couldn’t have been done better.

The heavy and slow-paced rendition, followed by a brisk ‘dinamani vamsa tilaka lavanya’ of Shri. Thyagaraja in Harikambojhi, saw the artist switch from one tempo to another with alacrity. The audience needless to say, was delighted with the variety.

The high point however, was yet to come. TMK’s Thodi was nothing short of extraordinary. His delineation of the ragam spread like an unstoppable current of water, leaving no crevice in the landscape untouched. Challenging himself more and more, he explored every single imaginable nuance of the ragam.

His voice did not escape his exacting nature, and as he constantly pushed it to touch inconceivable thresholds, a truly spectacular range emerged. You were left wondering if all of this could originate from one single human being, one voice. Truly, Krishna was here to reveal to us, new limits of the human imagination and capability.

Akkarai Subbulakshmi rose admirably to the challenge, and it was interesting to watch TMK inspire and be inspired by her violin. Just as the Thani Avarthanam began, several people including myself slipped out. TMK for a few minutes virtually brought the concert to a halt, sending around hushed whispers on how insensitive the audience could be. Feeling a little sheepish, I argued with myself but found no moral basis to support my somewhat ill-mannered exit.

I wondered however, if this is the feeling TMK really wanted to create. Was his move capable of inspiring introspection, on the respect that we accord to accompanying artists? Or would it be counter-productive and viewed as a reactionary move of an artist who is as well known for his strong opinions, as his musical excellence.

Only time will tell, but something told me that walking away with the guilt of an errant school child could seldom create an environment for meaningful introspection.

It was the meeting of North and South in terms of the music and, that of East and West as regards the instruments. Curiosity was writ large on the faces of the rasikas as Kadri Gopalnath shared the dais with Pravin Godkhindi. The saxophone and the flute or bansuri together created mesmerising effects as was evident from the rounds of spontaneous applause from the audience.

Both instruments demand total dedication and rigorous practice to achieve mastery. For Kadri, son of a nagaswaram vidwan, it was a chance presence at a band performance that drew him to the vibrant tone of the brass instrument. As for Pravin, his father Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi, is one of the senior most flautists of Karnataka, and has been performing for over 40 years.

The musicians commenced their jugalbandi with Hamsadhwani. Kadri’s alapana was majestic, while Pravin’s was mellifluous. In ‘Vatapi Ganapathim,’ they merged wonderfully well, creating a hypnotising impact. The kalpanaswaras, especially the concluding kuraippu and korvai were musically rich.

B Harikumar (mridangam), Kiran Godkhandi (Pravin’s brother) on the tabla and B. Rajasekar (morsing) made significant contribution. To the credit of Pravin, it should be mentioned that he deliberately chose a submissive role in the interest of overall harmony.

The Kapi by Kadri and ‘Enna Thavam Seythanai’ of Papanasam Sivan, showed the extent to which he has tamed his instrument. Similarly, after alap in Pilu, Pravin offered two short pieces, one in khemta taal and other in teen taal, both of which were soothing all the way.

Then Kadri took up RTP in Surya and Pravin rendered it in Suryakauns. The pallavi was ‘Parthsarathy Paripahimam, Sridhara Kesava Madhava.’ While Kadri added Bhupal Todi, Vasanthi and Brindavana Saranga, Pravin rendered Marwa and Amrithavarshini in the ragamalika swaras.

The thani by the trio was awe-inspiring. If Harikumar was majestic, Kiran was melodious while Rajasekar was sugary. The concluding korvai and the way Kadri joined it in the third avarthanam showcased the skill of the artists.

A Meera bhajan (‘Payo Re Mein Ne’) and ‘Krishna Nee Begane Baro’ created an ambience that was charged with devotion. Bharatiyar’s ‘Chinnanjiru Kiliye’ was lilting. The other pieces in the repertoire included a Marathi abhang, ‘Theertha Vittala Kshetra Vittala,’ Purandara devarnama ‘Tamboori Meetidava’; Tiruppugazh ‘Muththaiththaru’ and ‘Bhagyada Lakshmi.’

Perhaps ‘Chinnanjiru Kiliye’ and Tiruppugazh could have been avoided as Pravin could not join Kadri on these two numbers. Overall, the audience had a rich and varied fare.

Sriram Parasuram and Anooradha Sriram’s in-depth musical knowledge came to the fore in their raga enunciations.

In a thematic concert, at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, celebrating the glory of Lord Sri Rama in nine languages, Dr. Sriram Parasuram and Anooradha Sriram, presented a satisfying show.

Without the facility of proper acoustics the singers and the accompanists – Parur Ananthakrishnan on the violin, K.V Prasad on the mridangam, Umakant Puranik on the harmonium and Paynadath Jain on the tabla – had to contend with high decibel levels.

The presentation itself had several good ideas. Catchy tunes and languages we rarely hear on the South Indian stage such as Gujarati and Malayalam were highly interesting as was the core theme which never fails to draw – singing the glory of Lord Sri Rama throughout an evening. The crowd certainly enjoyed the Rama namam.

The depth of the two singers’ musical knowledge and the training under gurus such as T. Viswanathan were reflected in the raga enunciations. One must particularly mention Anooradha’s Sahana alapana that had attractive phrases in true classical style. It’s rare that a light music singer singing in a high pitch can handle the true classical flavours of Sahana. Anooradha would do well to lower the pitch for classical concerts as the phrases in the higher octaves sung at a high pitch can be disturbing.

The duo began with ‘Jaya Jaya’ in Nattai raga and quickly followed it up with an Ahirbhairav bhajan, ‘Ramaka Guna’ (Shuddha Hindi) to set off the meditation on Rama’s calmness and qualities. Sriram sang a good Bhairavi and followed it with Tamizh composition ‘Yaro Evar Yaaro.’ Violinist Parur Ananthakrishnan essayed a crisp Bhairavi. Arunachala Kavirayar created ‘Yaaro’ as Rama wondering “Who is this beautiful lady?” and not what is generally felt that it was Sita wondering at the sight of the handsome Rama. A kalpanaswara at ‘Chandra Bimba Vadana’ added to this rendering.

Anooradha’s voice lends itself to Revathy, a raga she brought out competently to couch the ‘Bhakti Kandaal’ verse in Malayalam. Sriram sang Bhairagi , raga Revathy’s Hindusthani version, followed by a bhajan. One wished for more coordination between the two singers at many points during the concert.

To praise Rama in Sanskrit, there was ‘Rama Kalita’ in raga Ramkali composed by Muthuswami Dikshitar. Anooradha began sketching raga Sahana as a prelude to the Telugu ‘Vandanamu Raghunandana,’ an utsava sampradaya creation by Tyagaraja. Violinist Parur Ananthakrishnan matched it with some good phrases in his raga outline.

Tulsidas never fails to tug at heartstrings as he did in the Brijbhasha song from Ramacharita Manas ‘Rama Pada.’ Ahalya regains the human form when the pollen from Rama’s feet touches her. Tulsidas extols ringing in the virtue of Rama. Sriram and Anooradha followed this with a Bengali song ‘Rathodi’ in Chandrakauns beautifully rendered. ‘Marukelara’ was fast paced and high on the decibel level to be enjoyed.

The Gujarati song in praise of Rama came in with a ‘Chaithi’ praising the Chaith season. A melodious Kannada creation and a Marathi abhang rounded off Rama’s praise in several languages. The accompanists rendered a neat thani.

“It is unfortunate that Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, one of the oldest in the country and which has been the abode of some of the greatest Carnatic exponents, does not have its own building,” Tirumala Tirupathi Ilayakoil Kelvi Appan Govinda Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamigal lamented here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the 111th December Music Festival of the sabha, the Jeeyar pointed out that the sabha was established in 1900 and had a glorious heritage. It has promoted every genre of fine arts like music, drama and dance, he added. He urged the president of the sabha, Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, to initiate immediate steps to construct a building and promised that he would declare it open too.

Earlier, he conferred the ‘Sangeetha Kalasarathy’ title on Carnatic musician Sowmya and presented the Palghat Mani Iyer Centenary Award to violinist T.N. Krishnan and the Dr. M.L.V. Award to budding musician Prasanna Venkatraman.

Guru of Carnatic music

Sudha Raghunathan lauded T.N. Krishnan as the “guru” of the entire Carnatic fraternity. As her guru M.L. Vasanathakumari used to say, he is not only a great instrumentalist but also a person of character and humility.

She commended Sowmya as a child prodigy whose repertoire was enormous. “Her concerts give you fulfilment,” she added.

Nithyasree Mahadevan, commended Sowmya’s “mastery over handling rare ragas”.

Even as a child Sowmya had “extraordinary maturity”, she observed. She was “tradition bound” in her musical journey, she added.

Geetha Ramanthan Bennett lauded Sowmya as one “who never gave up tradition”.

At the same time, she is making use of state-of-the-art technology to spread music all over the globe by founding Carnatica, an organisation with this noble objective.

Sowmya said “music is divine” and she also believed, like her guru S. Ramanathan, that “music should be first of all enjoyed.” Like him, she also advocated “art for art’s sake” theory.

T.N. Krishnan said Triplicane had been the abode of music for ages.

He recalled with nostalgia how great Carnatic exponents like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer used to sing in the halls overflowing with rasikas that included eminent vidwans.

President of the sabha Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti and Secretary M. Krishnamurthi explained the activities of the sabha.

As reported in The Hindu dated 16th December 2011
